The
Plantation Swim Team (PST) is very proud of the team’s
accomplishments since its inception in 1982. The original
Plantation Central Park pool was the dream of the 16-year old world
record holder in the 100-meter freestyle - Andy Coan. A City of
Plantation resident, Andy was the coach of the Plantation Aquatic
Club (PAC) from 1982-85. June Woolger took over the program in
1986, and with the City of Plantation, PAC became PST. Coach
Woolger was head coach from 1986-2000 and led the program to two
FGC Florida Junior Olympic Championships (1995, 1997). Coach
Woolger also led the PST women to their first Sectional title in
1997.
In 2000, Coach Woolger handed over the reigns to Jimmy Parmenter
who had served as the Head Age Group coach from 1990-2000. Coach
Parmenter has overseen the largest growth in team history during
his coaching tenure, with over 250 swimmers calling the Plantation
Swim Team home. In 2003, Coach Parmenter welcomed Dave Wathen (PST
National Coach) and his team of swimmers from the Sunrise Civic
Center to join the PST family. PST Sunrise is the only current
satellite program of the PST.
In 1997, a second 50-meter by 25-yard pool was completed. This pool
is adjacent to the original pool and has special facilities for
physically challenged swimmers. Also in 1997, the original pool was
modernized with a new Myrtha surface. In 1999, the City of
Plantation purchased a complete Colorado Timing System 5 with a
12-module scoreboard. With the addition of the scoreboard, PST is
now able to host meets utilizing both pools for each session. PST
currently hosts approximately 3-5 invitational meets per year. The
Winter Championships each December routinely attracts Olympic level
swimmers from all over the world.
